I have coached triathlon for over 12 years and successfully coached individual athletes for the last 10 years, coaching athletes to reach their goals and beyond, including race winners and international selection. I am now following my passion for endurance sports, intending to be the best coach I can be. I have many years of experience in triathlon and have raced at all distances.
I have the knowledge, and experience to improve any determined athlete.
I currently coach with the Army Triathlon Association the Army Medical Services Triathlon.
My athlete testimonials speak for themselves.
I have been coached by Rob for 10 years, during which time he has supported my growth from being a complete novice struggling with sprint distance races to a GB Age Group team member who thinks middle distance is ‘quite comfortable really’! Rob’s coaching style is very much tailored to the needs of the individual athlete, understanding their unique make-up in order to develop effective training habits whilst encouraging ‘thinking big’. And he delivers.
I can’t recommend Rob enough: I had ambitious goals and no real clear idea of how to achieve them. Rob worked really hard to make sure my goals were achievable, designed weekly training that was balanced and matched to my strengths and weaknesses, and gave feedback on individual sessions. We also spoke weekly about the training sessions and how it felt as a whole, reacting to how I was responding to the training and the interaction of training and life. As a result, I ran a 10km PB on a hilly course (36:09) and am look forward to my next Triathlon.
Rob coached me for just under two years, and with his help, I achieved all of my goals; I won the Army sprint Championships 2018 and came 1st in my age group, therefore qualifying for the ETU AG Championships 2018.
As a coach, Rob always considered my personal and professional circumstances and understood the need for flexibility being a key to success.
Rob was a very supportive coach and boosted my self confidence as an athlete, and made me believe in myself and my ability. He was very approachable and always there to talk to if needed; in particular before race's.
Without Rob's support, I wouldn't have achieved what I did in the short time we worked together. I would highly recommend his services to anyone considering a coach and wanting to improve their overall performance.
I am writing to wholeheartedly recommend Rob as a Triathlon Coach. As a busy entrepreneur striving to fulfill my dream of completing and excelling in half Ironman races, I have had the privilege of working with Rob for the past three years.
Rob's commitment to tailoring a personalized training schedule has been instrumental in my athletic journey. His weekly schedules are meticulously crafted to align with my specific training needs, and he consistently provides valuable feedback during our weekly discussions. What sets Rob apart is his ability to understand and accommodate my personal life obligations, ensuring a balanced and sustainable training routine.
Under Rob's guidance, I not only surpassed my previous achievements but also achieved a personal record in my half Ironman race. His professionalism, friendly demeanor, and collaborative approach make him not only an exceptional coach but also a pleasure to work with.
I wholeheartedly recommend Rob to fellow triathletes seeking to elevate their performance. His dedication, expertise, and supportive coaching style have undoubtedly played a pivotal role in my success, and I am confident he can do the same for others.
Sincerely,
Jeff Guo
I've worked with Rob for a number of years who most recently coached me whilst time trialling for the Army Cycling Race Team (ACRT). Since the last time I worked with Rob back in 2015 it was clear he had expanded his knowledge and rider/coach interaction vastly. From regular feedback on Training Peaks to weekly Zoom calls to chat through progress, Rob was always on hand when I needed him. His sessions, both on and off the bike were both challenging and fun and when given feedback, Rob wasn't afraid to adapt or tweak things to keep me engaged. Weekly interaction via Zoom was something which helped make me feel more involved in the coaching experience as a rider and Rob listened to feedback from the weeks' racing and gave advice and encouragement moving forward. During my time working with Rob in 2021 I achieved both personal and collective team goals. Both my strength off the bike, and power on the bike improved and I was able to set some PBs over almost all courses I raced on, including a10 mile PB of 20:32. My season was culminated in being accepted into the National 10 mile time trial where I hit some power PB numbers and the ACRT won the Inter Services Time Trial as a team, which were both season goals for Rob and I, and wouldn't have been achieved without his support. I would highly recommend Rob's services to any level of time triallist or triathlete, he is a caring, knowledgeable and highly experienced coach.
I worked with Rob for over a year, from 2020 to 2021, and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to any triathlete, novice or seasoned.
He is extremely generous with his time with the athletes he coaches, and looks out for us as individuals. I recall many a time where we went out for coffees after training to discuss my progress, giving pointers on swim technique, teaching me how to do transitions before my first triathlon, and even watching me race - understandably because we were both Leicester-based hence making in-person meetups possible.
Using the TrainingPeaks programme, Rob keeps track of sessions done, and checks in to how each session went. Working with Rob gave me structure to my overall training, which fitted around my variable work shifts. His weekly zoom check-ins kept me accountable, and we made changes to the upcoming week of training based on our discussion. The improvements came naturally from consistent training, and over a period of time, this compounded to significant gains more than I would have imagined.
If any dedicated athlete is seeking a triathlon coach, I'd recommend Rob without hesitation!
I had the pleasure of Rob helping me compete for my A and only race, Cotswold 113 2022.
Even though I've got baseline fitness and have done a couple of half distances before, I needed some structure and balance in my training.
Rob provided this for me, working around my busy home, work, and social life.
I'm an average runner, and a good swimmer but lack the bike. Rob helped me get through turbo sessions, spiced up my running programmes, and set up some good challenging swimming programmes to keep me on my toes.
Unfortunately, back in March, I had a setback which put me out for a couple of weeks. With Rob's understanding and patience, I recovered and got back into training. Due to my setback, I could not train on the bike. When I was able to go on the bike I became scared. Having no choice but to get out on the bike 2 days before Cotswold 113, I managed 16 miles, so I decided to do the race. With Rob's confidence in me and words of wisdom, I completed the race. The time wasn't my fastest, but with all the hurdles I had to overcome, I was just pleased I could start and finish even though the weather was rubbish.
Thanks, Rob, for all your help and support, not only these past 10 months but the last few years.
Rob coached me from being a non-cyclist, holiday swimmer and infrequent runner, to an Ironman finisher in 7 months. Rob, coached me in such a way that allowed me to be honest with how day-to-day, week-to-week life was affecting my training but kept me on track. The proof in the pudding is that he didn’t set me unrealistic distances and times to complete but helped me be accountable and consistent. It’s a two-way street with Rob and you get out what you put in. I will absolutely engage his services again and miss my Training Peaks plan and Zoom calls already.
Rob
is an incredible coach. In just over a year, I have gone from a triathlon novice to being the overall age-group winner at Swansea 70.3. and the runner-up at the Vitruvian in a new PB of 4:32. From the start he has been patient with my naivety in triathlon and takes the time to teach and explain why he is adopting the approach he is taking with me.
I know many people are concerned by having a coach who is not local, however, I can honestly say that this has not impacted my training. He provides feedback on all sessions, answers my questions promptly and we have a weekly catch up which is never time-pressured.
It is so motivating to have an individualised plan created by someone as (if not more) invested in your training and triathlon journey!
Rob coached me for two years and I went from competing in the East Midlands regional series with very unstructured training to winning national-level races and being selected for the England Next Generation Squad, goals I certainly would not have achieved without Rob’s coaching. Rob was always extremely supportive, he would come along to watch me race, helped me fit training around school work and If I ever needed a swim session last minute, a swift reply with a set from Rob was guaranteed. One of the best parts of having Rob as a coach was how accessible he was to talk to, he would always answer any questions I had throughout the week and would schedule a call if I wanted to discuss anything. My training always felt individualised and Rob would always want to make sure that I understood why he recommended certain sessions and what the benefits would be. I enjoy looking into the data of the training and we would often go over power numbers in WKO5 and analyse what they showed and in which areas I was strongest. Above all, I felt as though I was in control of my training and if I wanted to try something new one week Rob would give me his 100% support and would help me to make it work. The weekly coaching calls were always useful and constructive, we discussed how each session went over the past week and adjust the next week's planned training accordingly. We met up for several bike rides, end of season chats and he gave me a transition masterclass. Rob was always keen to make sure there were goals that I was working towards which helped me to trust the process and it paid off with massive improvements in race results, running times and power numbers in the two years we worked together. So I would recommend Rob to anyone who wants a coach that is fully invested in helping them achieve their triathlon goals.
I have been with Rob for 2 years and he has helped me improve no end, as an athlete and a person, Rob has helped me develop skills which go hand in hand to racing and in general personal life. Rob is an extremely knowledgeable coach with an abundance of experience. His words of wisdom and advice has helped me improve as an athlete and as a person. Some of my most memorable advice is Rob’s nutrition and strength training advice. As an athlete who never looked too closely to my nutrition, it was vital to sort it out to compete at the highest level which Rob helped me loads with. Equally, Rob introduced strength training to me and through it, I have seen great performance benefits. Rob loves to hear people’s advice and give his input on it too, which I really liked because I had many ideas which Rob then supported and gave his input on for me to get the best output.
When Rob first started coaching me, I was coming 20th-30th nationally in the British Super Series, finishing very low down the order in my age group. During this time, Rob was helping me develop skills I much needed to compete at the level I wanted to. Move on a year, I finished 12th nationally in the British Super Series final standings with my race results improving as well as my race craft through Rob’s very detailed race analysis, which I was able to work on my weaknesses then going forward. As of now, I am currently ranked 6th in my age group in the overall standings and being 3 places out from qualifying for a European Championship race (Finishing P7 overall in the trial race). I have however been selected to race in a European junior cup in Malta, my first international race. Equally, my race results have been very consistent with the help of Rob’s preparation advice and planning. Since I started with Rob, I have seen massive performance benefits and self improvement. Without a coach like Rob, this would not be the case because it is very important to have a coach to guide you through your sport.
Rob has helped me develop as an athlete and person. His weekly calls are great as he acts as a mentor as well as a coach which through my toughest times was really beneficial. When I was suffering through injuries, Rob helped me loads to come out the other side and reduce the chances of me getting myself injured again, as well as motivation while I was injured. For me, Rob has been an amazing coach, seeing many self improvements and learning from his wisdom along the way.
